What Is The Most Expensive House Sale In Torquay?

In 2020, a world record was broken when a common household item fetched a cool $8 million USD ($12 million Aussie dollarydoos). Nope, not a whole house – just a simple household item.

The item? A pen. You know, the thing you scribble down phone numbers with?

The Fulgur Nocturnus by Tibaldi has a name as pretentious as you’d expect for an ink pen that’s encrusted with almost 1000 black diamonds, 123 rubies and an 18-carat gold nib.

And what’s even more insane about this whole thing is that the Fulgur Nocturnus is worth 50% more than Torquay’s most expensive house sale.

Yes. You read that right. 50% more.

Let’s talk luxury real estate in Torquay as we look at the most expensive house sales in our town:

82 The Esplanade, Torquay – $7.9mil

This unassuming 1960s-built brick home may not be the flashy mansion you were expecting for the most expensive house sale in Torquay. But you know what they say: location, location, location. And this location, sold in February 2024, is certainly worth the price tag closing in on nearly $8mil.

82 The Esplanade is nestled in the highly desirable pocket of Old Torquay, where all of the town’s most expensive real estate is located. What’s special about this home is its ocean vistas from the living and dining rooms which will never be built out thanks to its beachfront, corner block location. Located on a whopping double block of 1400sqm, this $7.9mil property is regarded by many as the best piece of real estate in the city.

98 The Esplanade, Torquay – $7+ mil

Just up the road is 98 The Esplanade, fetching over $7mil back in January 2023. Now, this one is probably more what you were expecting: a sleek, modern flat-roof mansion with floor-to-ceiling windows and a pool. 98 The Esplanade has uninhibited views of the ocean, spanning from Point Lonsdale Lighthouse to Point Danger. Initially quoting around $2.3mil, the owners (and agents) would be pretty over the moon when it sold for three times that price.

189 The Esplanade, Torquay – $5.9mil

Backtracking to January 2022 (notice how all the most expensive homes sell in summer?), 189 The Esplanade sold for $5.9mil, the most expensive house sale in Torquay at that time. Looking at it now, we reckon that’s an absolute bargain price.

The two-storey home with a rooftop deck and pool was built by renowned local architect Lachlan Shepherd and looks more like a Manhattan loft on the inside than a coastal beach home.

27 Pride Street, Old Torquay – $4.5mil

The highest-selling property in Old Torquay, not on The Esplanade, was one of our very own-27 Pride Street. Which sold for $4.5mil, just weeks after it was put on the market. The home equals the record price for an off-beach residential property in Torquay, shared with a contemporary six-bedroom residence in Munday St set in early March, CoreLogic records show.
